The IRS Survival Guide by Andrew J. Bosserman

If you own a business, the IRS already has your attention. Maybe a notice just landed in your mailbox. Maybe you know your records are not as clean as they should be. Either way, what you do next matters more than you think.

Most people make their most expensive mistakes in the first 48 hours, before they ever talk to a professional. This book is how you avoid them.

Most tax books are written by people who studied the IRS.
This one is written by someone who worked there.

Andrew Bosserman spent years on the other side of the table, auditing business owners for the IRS. He knows which mistakes invite a closer look, which responses close a case, and which ones quietly make it worse. Now he puts that on your side.

After reading this book, you’ll know how to
01

Build records so clean the IRS has nothing to argue with

02

Read an IRS notice, understand what it actually means, and respond in a way that closes your case faster

03

Push back on an IRS determination through the right channel, administrative or judicial

04

Negotiate a payment plan or settlement you can actually live with

05

Work with a tax professional the right way, so their time protects you instead of running up a bill

06

Talk to an IRS agent in a way that helps your case instead of handing them ammunition

A short walkthrough from Andrew on what trips up business owners in the first 48 hours.

Don’t make your first move blind.

The time to learn the IRS playbook is before you need it, not after the notice arrives.

About the author

Meet the author.

Andrew J. Bosserman · Former IRS Agent Turned Tax Attorney

Andrew Bosserman knows how the IRS thinks, because he used to work there. As a former IRS agent turned defense attorney, he now defends the business owners he once audited.

He founded Boss Tax Law to give taxpayers what they rarely get in a tax dispute: an advocate who understands both sides of the table, and the human side of dealing with the IRS.

He is also a CPA who has prepared hundreds of tax returns, and a small business owner who once ran a Christmas tree farm. He holds a law degree from Wake Forest and is admitted to all three federal tax courts: the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. District Court. Andrew lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife and kids.

Great job of summarizing the process of dealing with the IRS, as well as pointing out the important nuances that create traps to fall into which can create problems.
